A Nigerian Leads the World: Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, Rotary International President 2026–2027

When the gavel of Rotary International passes to Olayinka Hakeem Babalola on 1 July 2026, it will mark a defining moment — not just for Nigeria, but for the entire African continent. Babalola will become the second African to lead Rotary International, following Jonathan B. Majiyagbe of the Rotary Club of Kano, Nigeria, who served in 2003–04. For a club like ours, rooted in Nigerian soil and committed to the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self, this is a source of immense pride. Rotary International

From Ibadan to the World Stage

Yinka began his Rotary journey at the age of 22, participating as a Rotaractor from 1988 to 1994, before joining the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Rivers State, Nigeria in 1994. What started as a young man’s commitment to community service would grow, over four decades, into one of the most distinguished careers in Rotary history. Rotary District 5400

His professional life has been equally remarkable. He received a university degree in engineering in 1988 and went on to spend 25 years in the oil and gas industry, holding senior positions in Shell PLC and executing projects across four continents. An engineer, attorney, and entrepreneur, he is the founder of two companies: Riviera Services Ltd., an oil and gas infrastructure delivery company, and Lead and Change Consulting, an executive coaching and organisational performance advisory group. Born in Ibadan, he is a member of the Jericho Businessmen Club, an organisation in his birth city that provides input to governments on economic and social policy. He and his wife, Preba, are based in Port Harcourt. Rotary International

A Steady Rise Through Rotary Leadership

Babalola’s ascent within Rotary has been deliberate and distinguished. His leadership roles include serving as District Governor (2011–2012), RI Vice President (2019–2020), and member of the RI Board of Directors (2018–2020). Rotary5130

Beyond governance, he has championed some of Rotary’s most critical humanitarian causes. He was an active leader on the End Polio Now Countdown to History Campaign Committee (2017–2023) and has served on the Nigeria National PolioPlus Committee since 2013. He is also a trustee of ShelterBox UK and a director of the Safe Blood Africa project. Rotary5130Rotary Down Under

His dedication has earned him some of Rotary’s highest honours — including the Africa Centennial Heroes Award, the Regional Service Award for a Polio-Free World, the RI Service Above Self Award, and The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service. He is also an Arch Klumph Society member, recognising his sustained philanthropic commitment to The Rotary Foundation. Rotary Down Under

An Unexpected Call to the Highest Office

Babalola’s path to the presidency came through extraordinary circumstances. His appointment followed the resignation of President-elect SangKoo Yun, who stepped down to focus on his recovery after recent cancer treatment. In accordance with Rotary’s Code of Policies, the Board convened a special session to appoint a leader with extensive Rotary experience and a proven record of service. District 9213

The choice of Babalola was unanimous in spirit — a leader who had spent over three decades earning his place at the summit of the organisation he loves.

Just weeks after his selection, Babalola was already on calls with 300 Rotaractors from across Africa and the world — celebrating with the next generation of Rotary leaders the very journey he himself had taken from Rotaractor to the highest office in Rotary. Lakehavasucityrotary

“Create Lasting Impact” — A Vision for the Year Ahead

For the 2026–27 Rotary year, President Babalola has chosen the theme “Create Lasting Impact” — a call to action that speaks to the very soul of Rotary’s mission.

“Rotary transforms lives — not only through the projects we deliver, but through the hope we share, the meaningful relationships we build, and the shared purpose we inspire,” he has said. Rotary International

For our club, this theme resonates deeply. As the Rotary E-Club of Nigeria New Dawn, we are committed to carrying this vision forward — through our community projects, our fellowship, and our commitment to making a difference that outlasts any single year or administration.

President Babalola’s election is a reminder that Africa is not just a beneficiary of Rotary’s global mission — it is a leader of it. And as Nigerians, we stand inspired.

The Rotary E-Club of Nigeria New Dawn congratulates President Olayinka Hakeem Babalola and pledges its full support for a transformative 2026–27 Rotary year.
